Project Overview

Memoryto is an AI-powered language learning app built around adaptive flashcards and a smart spaced-repetition (SRS) system. I led the product design end-to-end, from onboarding to daily study flows, working with a cross-functional team to turn vocabulary learning into something that actually sticks, across more than a dozen languages.

Problem

Most flashcard apps stop at simple word-meaning memorization, leaving learners able to recognize a word without being able to actually use it. User feedback also showed a gap between beginner and advanced learners' needs, and a lack of tools for people who wanted to study their own vocabulary lists rather than generic decks.

Key Issues:

  • Traditional flashcards train recognition, not real usage
  • No adaptive review timing — learners forget words at the wrong pace
  • One-size-fits-all decks don't serve both beginners and advanced learners
  • No easy way to build a personal, goal-specific study list

Research

The app supports 4 target languages: English, Spanish, French, and German, and its broader learner base spans dozens of native languages. Research combined competitive analysis of SRS-based learning apps with continuous, real feedbacks.

Research Activities:

  • Defined six distinct learning skills needed for real fluency: meaning, reading, writing, listening, speaking, and activation

Design Process

The core design challenge was making an adaptive SRS engine feel simple rather than technical. I designed the review flow, the multi-skill flashcard system, the AI-powered visual dictionary, and the deck browsing/creation experience, iterating with the team based on real usage patterns and feedback.

Design Steps:

  • Wireframed onboarding, review sessions, and deck library flows
  • Designed the "Adaptive SRS" experience — surfacing the right word at the right time
  • Built the multi-skill flashcard system (6 practice modes per word)
  • Designed the custom deck builder for personalized study goals

Solution

The shipped product combines an adaptive SRS engine with six flashcard types, an AI visual dictionary that pairs new words with images for faster retention, and a large library of pre-made decks, plus the ability to build fully custom ones.
